Carless Reef sits about an hour from Hurghada by boat — two large pinnacles rising abruptly from deep water, without the shelter a fringing reef gives you. It rewards the trip out, but it is not a beginner site, and it should not be sold as one.
What makes Carless Reef different from a normal Hurghada reef day?
Most Hurghada day trips visit sheltered reef systems with predictable, gentle conditions. Carless Reef is open sea with no protected mooring, at 12 to 25 metres, and the current here runs unpredictably in direction rather than in one steady flow. That current is also exactly what makes the site rich — it feeds an unusually productive food chain along the pinnacles and the coral-garden plateau between them.
Do you actually see sharks here?
Sometimes, and it needs to be said honestly: hammerhead sharks are seen at Carless Reef, but rarely, and mostly by the earliest groups of the day. It is not a shark-diving site in the way Elphinstone is during its October-December season — treat any hammerhead sighting here as a genuine bonus, not the reason to book. What is dependable is the moray eel population, which is unusually common and camera-friendly along both pinnacles, and the wider marine life the current sustains, from nudibranchs up to passing tuna.
What certification do you need?
This is rated a hard site, and settled weather plus real diver experience both matter here — the open, unprotected water and unpredictable current are not conditions to learn drift technique in for the first time.
