If it has been a year or two, or ten, since your last dive, the honest answer is that some of it comes straight back and some of it does not. A scuba refresher is built for exactly that situation: one relaxed session with an instructor, so you start your dive holiday confident rather than guessing.
What is a scuba refresher, and what is PADI ReActivate?
PADI ReActivate is the PADI refresher programme for certified divers who have not dived for a while. It is not a test and nobody is timing you. It is a short knowledge review, a skills session in calm shallow water, and a proper reef dive, so that buoyancy, mask clearing and the small safety habits feel normal again.

How long since your last dive is too long?
There is no single rule, but many dive centres and liveaboards ask for a refresher when your last logged dive is more than twelve months ago. If you feel unsure sooner than that, ask for one: it costs you half a day and buys you a much better holiday.
Consider a refresher if any of these apply:
- Your last dive was more than a year ago.
- You trained a long time ago and have dived very little since.
- Buoyancy, mask clearing or regulator recovery felt shaky last time.
- You plan a liveaboard or a harder dive and want your confidence back first.
What happens during a ReActivate session?
- A short knowledge review. The essentials rather than the whole manual: planning, air management, buddy procedures and what your computer is telling you.
- Skills in calm shallow water. Mask clearing and removal, regulator recovery, weight check and trim, a controlled ascent and hovering until it feels normal again.
- A real reef dive. The day ends with diving rather than drills, and your instructor sees you diving normally before you join a group.

How long does it take, and what is included?
From half a day to a full day, depending on how much you want to go over. Our refresher includes full dive equipment, the PADI instructor and materials, the PADI certification fee, lunch and soft drinks on board, and hotel transfers within Hurghada. The marine park entrance fee and transfers from Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh and El Gouna are extra, and the trip page shows the live prices.
What do you need to join a refresher?
- Any entry-level scuba certification, from PADI or another agency.
- A minimum age of 10.
- Your certification card and logbook, if you have them, and a completed medical questionnaire.
When should you book it?
On your arrival day. That way your confidence is back before the first group dive, and your instructor can see you diving normally. From there, a 5-day dive week is an easy next step. If you never completed a certification or want a full update, look at the PADI Open Water course instead, and when you are ready to go further, the Advanced Open Water course.
