Rare false killer whale pod reported near Ashrafi Island in the Red Sea

A conservation association in the Red Sea says a group of eight false killer whales was seen near Ashrafi Island on 13 October 2026, a rare sighting for the Hurghada coast. The group included a very large male estimated at six metres or more, a juvenile and several adults.

Observers followed the animals for about an hour and watched them hunt a stingray. False killer whales are oceanic dolphins rather than true whales, and Egyptian authorities describe them as peaceful. The association called the sighting a sign of the Red Sea’s biodiversity and asked for continued monitoring and protection.
