Hurghada's reputation as a Red Sea diving hub comes down to the sheer variety packed into a short boat ride from shore: sheltered lagoons perfect for a first certification dive, sheer walls that drop into blue water, and the odd wreck for good measure. Here are five sites that regularly come up whenever local dive guides are asked where to take a group.
1. El Fanadir
About an hour from central Hurghada, El Fanadir is built around a long sloping wall running down to a drop-off at 20-25 metres, with a shallow lagoon alongside that keeps things comfortable for newer divers. The wall itself is riddled with cracks and small caves, and it has a reputation as one of the better night-diving spots in the area. Look closely along the wall for blue-spotted rays resting on the sand and moray eels — yellow-edged, yellow-mouth and giant morays all turn up here — while schools of sweetlips and goatfish move over the reef top.
2. Shaab Abu Nugar
A larger reef system around 90 minutes out, Abu Nugar rewards a full day rather than a quick stop. Its three main sections — Torfa, Gota and Erug — each dive differently: one a drift past big table corals, another a compact swim-around reef small enough to circle in a single dive, the third a tour between coral-covered pinnacles over a sandy floor. Cleaning stations dotted around the reef are a good bet for watching groupers and snappers queue up for a scrub from resident shrimp and wrasse.
3. Umm Gamaar
An offshore island reef with a dramatic wall on both its east and west sides, Umm Gamaar is more exposed to weather than sites closer to shore, so conditions matter more here. The reward for picking a calm day is real: white tip reef sharks occasionally patrol the wall, and it's one of the few spots in the Hurghada area where a manta ray sighting gets reported now and then. Expect jackfish and tuna working the fusilier schools along the wall, with barracuda often hanging mid-water nearby.
4. Small Giftun
One of the more accessible reef systems near Hurghada, Small Giftun is a regular stop on daily diving boats thanks to its mix of coral gardens and gentle contours — a dependable choice when the goal is simply a relaxed, colourful reef dive rather than a technical challenge.
5. Careless Reef
A classic Hurghada name, Careless Reef combines a network of pinnacles with drop-offs that suit both new and experienced divers on the same trip, which is part of why it keeps coming up as a recommendation for mixed-level groups.
Planning your dive days
Most of these sites are visited as part of standard daily diving trips out of Hurghada — typically two dives a day with a lunch break on board — so it's worth booking a multi-day package if you want to work through several of them rather than picking just one.
