No certification, no experience, just curiosity. Here is exactly what happens on a Discover Scuba Diving day in Hurghada, from pickup to your first breath at 8 metres.

"Discover Scuba Diving" is a real dive with a real instructor, not a shallow pool demo — but it is hard to picture if you have never done it. Here is the day, roughly as it happens.

07:30–08:00 — pickup or marina meet

Hotel pickup is included on most Hurghada trips (free within the Hurghada area, small surcharge further out), or you meet directly at the marina. No paperwork beyond a simple health questionnaire — a handful of yes/no questions your instructor talks you through if anything is unclear.

08:30–09:30 — briefing and confined water

Before the open water, you get a short pool or shallow-water session with the instructor one-on-one: how to breathe through the regulator, how to clear water from the mask, hand signals. This is where any nerves usually disappear — it is a controlled, standing-depth environment and nobody moves on until it feels normal.

10:00–10:45 — the actual dive

Depth is kept to a beginner-friendly maximum of around 8 metres, with the instructor beside you the entire time — not supervising from a distance, physically next to you. You are on a real reef, seeing real fish, for roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Most people surface talking over each other trying to describe what they just saw.

11:00 onward — lunch, second dive, boat back

Lunch, coffee, tea, water and soft drinks are served on board on our Hurghada day trips. Many Discover Scuba packages include a second dive the same day, which is usually the better one — you already know what to expect and can actually enjoy it rather than process it.

Do I need to know how to swim?

Basic comfort in water is expected, but you are not swimming laps — you are floating and breathing with equipment doing the work. If you have any doubt, mention it when you book.

Does this count toward a real certification?

The Hurghada version is a standalone experience day. If you already know you want the full PADI Open Water certification, it is usually cheaper and faster to book that directly rather than a trial day first — three to four days and you are certified for life, worldwide.
