Marsa Alam is what Hurghada was thirty years ago: fewer hotels, longer drives, and reefs that see a fraction of the traffic. It is the right choice for divers who want the sea more than the resort — and the wrong one for anyone who wants nightlife within walking distance.

What makes Marsa Alam different?

Three things. First, shore diving — several bays here have reef close enough that you walk in from the beach rather than board a boat. Second, big animals: dugongs, turtles in numbers, and in autumn the oceanic whitetips of Elphinstone. Third, space: sites that would host six boats off Hurghada often hold one or two here.

The trade-off is logistics. Fewer direct flights, longer transfers, and hotels spread along a lot of coastline.

The sites worth planning around

  • Abu Dabab — seagrass bay with resident green turtles and, with luck, dugongs. Shallow, easy, and as good snorkelling as it is diving.
  • Elphinstone Reef — an offshore pinnacle with walls dropping past recreational limits. Strong currents, advanced divers, and oceanic whitetips in October–November.
  • Marsa Shouna and Marsa Mubarak — sheltered bays, good for training dives and for spotting turtles and rays without a long boat ride.
  • Samadai (Dolphin House) — a protected reef with a resident spinner dolphin pod and a strict access system that keeps part of the lagoon permanently off-limits to boats.

Is Marsa Alam good for beginners?

For calm, shallow, sheltered training bays — yes, and some of the best in Egypt. For the sites Marsa Alam is famous for — not really. Elphinstone is an advanced dive with real current, and the offshore reefs reward experience.

A fair way to read it: learn in Hurghada where it is cheaper and the logistics are simpler, then come to Marsa Alam once you have twenty or thirty dives and can use them.

When should you go?

Water runs 22–30°C year round. October and November are the months to target for oceanic whitetips at Elphinstone. Spring brings the calmest surface conditions. Summer is hot on land and busiest in the water; the dugong bays get crowded by mid-morning, so go early.

Marsa Alam or Hurghada?

Short version: Hurghada for learning, for choice, for cheaper flights and for a trip where non-divers also need entertaining. Marsa Alam for quieter reefs, shore diving, dugongs and big-animal chances. Neither is better; they answer different questions.
