Wild dolphins are one of the easiest big wildlife experiences to add to a Red Sea holiday, even if you never put on a tank. But the famous dolphin reefs are not all the same: they sit in different places, host different dolphins and suit different travellers. Here is how to choose, and how to behave once you are in the water.
Where can you see wild dolphins near Hurghada and Marsa Alam?
There are three well-known places. Near Hurghada, Dolphin House means Sha’ab El Erg, a horseshoe reef about 35 km north-east of the city, off El Gouna, where a resident pod of wild bottlenose dolphins lives. Near Marsa Alam, Sha’ab Samadai, also called Dolphin House, shelters a resident pod of spinner dolphins. Further south, Satayeh, or Dolphin Reef, is known for large pods of spinner dolphins.

How do Dolphin House, Samadai and Satayeh compare?
- Dolphin House, Hurghada: bottlenose dolphins around a calm central lagoon. Mainly a snorkelling and boat day of about six hours with one or two reef stops, popular with families and first-timers.
- Sha’ab Samadai, Marsa Alam: spinner dolphins in a protected sanctuary with regulated access, about 40 minutes by boat. A sheltered lagoon of roughly 5 to 20 m suits snorkellers and beginner divers.
- Satayeh, far south: a remote horseshoe reef with a protected dolphin lagoon of about 3 to 25 m. Trips combine a road transfer with a boat ride, so it is a full day. Do not confuse it with Samadai.

Why is a dolphin sighting never guaranteed?
These are wild animals, free to come and go. Spinner dolphins rest in sheltered lagoons by day after hunting at night, which is why these reefs are such good places to look. Even so, sightings are common but never guaranteed. The best chance is an early boat, when the water is calm and boat traffic is low, and calm weather is essential for the crossing.

How should you behave around wild dolphins?
- Enter the water quietly and stay together with your group.
- Never chase, touch, corner or feed a dolphin. Keep your distance and let them choose whether to come closer.
- Follow the rules posted on the day. At protected sites access is regulated precisely so the pod is not harassed by too many boats and swimmers.
- Listen to your guide. If the dolphins leave, let them go.

Which dolphin trip should you pick?
Choose by where you are staying and how much time you have. From Hurghada, the Dolphin House trip is the classic day with two snorkelling stops, and a private speedboat adds dolphins and island stops when the weather allows. From Marsa Alam, Samadai is the sanctuary day, and Satayeh is the remote full-day option.
Can non-divers and children join a dolphin trip?
Yes. These are snorkelling days, so no certification is needed. Minimum ages on our trip pages are currently 6 for Samadai and Satayeh and 8 for Dolphin House and the private speedboat, so check the page before you book.
