Somewhat protected in the bend of the reef, but mooring space is tight and current can be strong — some experience needed deeper
A bend in the Umm Gamaar reef where a sandy slope runs past two big coral blocks into very deep water — vertical wall to the south, steep slope to the north. Start deep at the coral blocks, follow the wall north to the current split point, then work shallower toward the moorings; with air to spare there is a small cave at 8 metres before a picture-perfect safety stop on the reef top.
What You Might See
Big schools of anthias, snapper & sweetlips
Every common Red Sea butterflyfish
Gorgonians & soft corals on the wall
Cave at 8m
Suitable for
- Divers with some experience
- Advanced Open Water recommended
- Deep-dive training useful
- Snorkellers (shallow top only)
Best time to dive here
Divable all year — the Red Sea has no closed season. Water runs from about 22°C in February to 30°C in August, and March–May and September–November give the most comfortable mix of warm water, light wind and good visibility. Conditions at this site: Somewhat protected in the bend of the reef, but mooring space is tight and current can be strong — some experience needed deeper
