En savoir plus sur cette excursion
There are two kinds of diver: the one who surfaces and looks around to find the boat, and the one who surfaces next to it. The Underwater Navigator specialty is the difference, and it is a smaller difference than most divers expect — three dives.
The first dive is about natural navigation, which is what good guides actually use: reading the slope of the reef, the direction of ripples in the sand, where the light is, which way the current was running when you dropped in. You learn to build a mental map as you go rather than trying to reconstruct one afterwards.
The second dive brings in the compass properly — not just holding it and swimming, but reciprocal headings, kick-cycle and timed distance estimation, and how to keep a heading while a current pushes you sideways. You find out how far off you are, and then how to stop being off.
The third dive puts it together into patterns — squares and triangles run blind, then a navigation exercise where you locate a specific object and return to your starting point. By the end you can plan a dive as a route rather than a direction.
Beyond the certification, this is the specialty instructors most often recommend first. It reduces air consumption, because a diver who knows where they are stops swimming extra distance. It makes buddy separation far less likely. And navigation is a prerequisite skill for the Rescue Diver course, so taking it now saves a step later.
Prerequisites: PADI Open Water Diver or equivalent, minimum age 10. Counts toward the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification as an adventure dive, and toward Master Scuba Diver.
