Ask instructors which single course made them a better diver and most say Rescue Diver, not because it is the hardest card on the wall but because it is the one built entirely around other people's emergencies instead of your own comfort. Here is what it actually involves in Hurghada.
What the course covers
Rescue Diver is scenario-based: simulated tired divers, panicking divers, unresponsive divers at the surface and underwater, and search patterns for a missing diver. You practise recognising problems before they become emergencies — a stressed diver's body language, a buddy separating without noticing — and the actual response once something has gone wrong. It is physically demanding: expect to do a lot of swimming, much of it towing another person.
The prerequisite: Emergency First Response
You need EFR (CPR and first aid) either already held or completed alongside Rescue Diver — EFR runs from EUR 175 and most centres bundle the two together if you do not already hold a current EFR or equivalent certificate.
Price, duration and requirements
In Hurghada: three days, from EUR 340, minimum age 15, and you need an Advanced Open Water certification (or equivalent) to enrol. See the Rescue Diver course page for current dates and price. A Marsa Alam version also runs, over four days, from EUR 369.
What does Rescue Diver actually change about your diving?
- You notice problems earlier — in your own diving and your buddy's, well before they become serious.
- Panic management, both other people's and your own, stops being theoretical.
- It is the direct prerequisite for Divemaster — see our Divemaster course guide if that is the next step after this one.
- Dive buddies notice. Ask anyone who has dived with a Rescue-trained partner after an incident, however minor.
How hard is it, honestly?
Harder than anything before it on the ladder, and that is the point — you are simulating real distress, which is tiring in a way pleasant reef dives are not. Reasonable swimming fitness matters more here than at any earlier stage. It is also, by wide agreement among people who have done it, more satisfying to finish than any card before it.
