Sha'ab Samadai — almost always called Dolphin House — is a horseshoe-shaped reef about 40 minutes from Marsa Alam, and it is one of the few places anywhere where a resident pod of wild dolphins is reliably, respectfully visible.
Why is it called Dolphin House?
A resident pod of spinner dolphins uses the sheltered lagoon inside the reef's horseshoe to rest during the day, after hunting overnight in deeper water. That daytime resting pattern is exactly what makes sightings so consistent here compared with open-water dolphin encounters elsewhere, which depend on chance timing.
Is access actually regulated?
Yes — Samadai is a protected marine sanctuary, and entry is managed rather than open. That regulation exists specifically to stop the pod from being harassed by too many boats and swimmers at once, and it is the reason encounters here stay calm rather than becoming a chase. Respecting the posted rules on the day (distance, no touching, no chasing) is not a formality — it is the entire reason this site still has a resident pod to see.
What else is inside the reef?
Beyond the dolphins, the inner lagoon is genuinely good diving and snorkelling in its own right: shallow, light-filled water at roughly 5 to 20 metres, coral gardens and pinnacles, abundant reef fish, resident moray eels and the occasional turtle passing through.
Do you need to be an experienced diver?
No — the site is rated easy, calm and sheltered, suitable for snorkellers and beginner divers alongside more experienced ones. The dolphins themselves are seen from the surface as often as underwater, since they rest near the top of the water column.
Can you guarantee a dolphin sighting?
No honest answer to that is "yes" — this is a wild, resident pod behaving naturally, not a performance. What the regulated, low-disturbance access genuinely does is make a sighting far more likely here than at almost any comparable site, which is the honest version of what "reliable" means with wildlife.
